Following
the new country's customs can be advantageous, because
it allows for a greater understanding of the new environment
and the people in it. It also allows for a more ready
acceptance into the community when similar behaviors
are exhibited, since people are afraid of the unknown.
By adopting the customs of the new country, however,
the residents of the country will be unable to experience
your own customs and, with time, customs from your
home country may be forgotten, making it harder to
return to your own country.
In my opinion, either option, alone, is not ideal.
I believe that some elements of the new culture should
be adopted and followed, particularly when in the community.
However, when at home, your own customs
will be much easier to uphold and maintain, since this
