There
is a growing sense that society and particularly the
young contingent of society are becoming brutalized
to extreme violence by the constant stream of violent
images on the television and big screen. One of the
earliest examples of such a claim came after the release
of Stanley Kubrik's controversial adaptation of Anthony
Burgess's equally controversial book, A Clockwork Orange.
The film depicts a particularly brutal rape scene in
which the story's central protagonist carries out his
horrific attack while singing the classic song, Singing
in the Rain. Following the UK release of the film several
attacks were reported, where the attacker had allegedly
“copied” the scene by singing the same song during
the attack. The film was pulled from circulation and
banned. The question is, can a film about violence
in society be blamed for creating violence in society?
Here we have a clear chicken and egg situation. (149
