In
the case of learning a language, much can be done alone
with the aid of CDs, textbooks, television programs
and self-evaluation tests. As an English-speaker learning
another, similar European language such as French,
for example, a reasonably high level can be attained
in the target language this way. In the case, however,
of a language that falls outside that bracket of Latin-based
romance languages, and particularly in the case of
Asiatic languages, it becomes less possible to attain
any degree of proficiency without the help of a teacher
- even if that teacher is simply a native speaker of
the target language without any specific teaching qualifications.
Teaching is, moreover, a form of communication. What
better way to learn a language, which is after all
a tool of communication, than by communicating with
a teacher?
