I agree that advertising can tell us a lot about a
country. For countries that are far away from one another
like Japan and Canada, advertising Japan in Canada
will help Canadians to learn a lot about Japanese
customs and its peoples. The reverse is also true.
In fact, Japanese people may be interested in visiting
Canada, or Canadians may visit Japan because of the
ads they see. Advertisements help to spark interests
in the other country. Ads also help people in their
home countries to realize that this world is big
and there are many different people everywhere. Advertisements
are a great way to introduce cross cultural exchange
and understanding. It is also a good way to educate
the people of the home country of the existence of
other countries and people. (133 words)

I disagree with this statement because I think that
advertising can be very misleading. Most often the real
thing is
very different from what is being advertised. The advertised
version is always bigger and much more appealing than
the real one. Most often when a country advertises itself,
it only shows the good things about the country. For
example, an advertisement of Jamaica only shows the beautiful
beaches and resorts, they do not show the poverty in
the country. They also do not show the Jamaican army
lined up against one side of the fence across from the
airport. Every country has some aspect about it that
it is not proud to show and advertisements are completely
one sided to show only the good of a country. Therefore,
they cannot be trusted to represent what a country is
really like.
